In this fourth chapter Tonny takes the reader to the various locations where she lived and which inspired her between 1973 and 1993. Important in this period was the restoration of the sixteenth-century Oaxacan convent of Santa Catalina, which was converted into a hotel. The restoration respected the original layout of the convent’s construction with its thick walls built of stone, adobe, and brick. It helped Tonny understand how easily the function or use of a building can change.

It is this dynamic element of change in human activity that makes architecture such a fascinating field of work for Tonny. For the past twenty-six years, the Santa Catalina convent with its many patios has been a popular luxury hotel with many regular visitors.
